How to Make a Mask to Help Prevent the Spread of the Coronavirus

Gov. Tom Wolf issued a statement on Friday recommending that Pennsylvanians wear masks to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. He urged them to make their own out of fabric, and to wear them when they go out in public. So, this weekend was devoted to making masks for our family, friends, and neighbors.

Here is a guide to help you make a mask of your own.

Supplies:
·         Cotton fabric (pre-washed)
·         Thread
·         ¼ inch wide braided elastic
·         Sewing supplies: sewing machine, pins, scissors, ruler

 ***

Step 1: Cut two pieces of fabric.

·         8 x 10 inches for a large mask (will fit most men)
·         6 x 9 inches for a medium mask (will fit most women and children)
·         5 x 7 inches for a small mask (will fit toddlers)

***

Step 2: Cut two 7-inch strips of elastic for the large and medium masks; or two 5-inch strips for the small masks.

***

Step 3: Pin right sides of the fabric together.

***

Step 4: Begin sewing about 3 inches from the end of the top, long edge.
Stop about ¼ inch from the edge.

***

Step 5: Insert the elastic between the layers, at an angle and lock it into place, turn the corner. Continue sew this edge, stopping ¼ inch from the end. Pull the other end of the elastic down to the corner and lock it into place. Turn the corner.

***

Step 6: Sew the entire bottom edge, stopping about ¼ inch from the edge.

***

Step 7: Again, insert the elastic between the layers, at an angle, lock it into place as you finish this edge. Turn the corner and sew the rest of the edge, stopping ¼ inch from the edge. Pull the other end of the elastic down to the corner and lock it into place as you sew the rest of this side. Turn the corner.

***

Step 8: Sew about 3 inches on the top seam, leaving a gap (about 3 inches) for the opening.

***

Step 9: Find the opening and turn the fabric right side out. Smooth out the fabric, keeping the elastic straps out of the way.

***

Step 10: Pin the opening closed.

***

Step 11: Pin three tucks to each short side (two tucks for the smaller versions)

***

Step 12: Sew a ¼ seam around the perimeter of the mask. Repeat.

Step 13: Wash the mask and iron it.

NOTE: These masks are not guaranteed to protect you from COVID-19 and they are not a substitute for social distancing. They are intended to help prevent the spread of the virus.
